Karen Sioson, Bathed in Light

Karen Sioson has been painting since the 1990s and became a full-time artist in 2010. A graduate of Interior Design from the University of the Philippines, she became fascinated with the watercolor medium during her studies. It was a required course in rendering interior design plates, prior to the age of SketchUp and computer aided drawings.
She returned to her hometown in Bataan after graduation and continued to paint with watercolor, with her garden as her visual palette. The age of the Internet made the acquisition of watercolor materials and marketing her works an encouraging experience as an artist.
She has exhibited with other watercolor enthusiasts and artists in the local and international scene beginning in 2012. Her works have been shown in several Asian and European cities and one South American city, such as Hong Kong, Bali, New Delhi, Shaanxi, Belgrade, Budapest, Mexico, just to name a few. She is working with like-minded artists, and helped start an organization in the Philippines that focus on watercolor advocacy. She and fellow founding members, lead the International Watercolor Society of the Philippines and the Philippine Guild of Watercolorists to elevate watercolor art, partnering with art organizations both local and abroad to promote art appreciation.*
Karen Sioson basks in her own Garden of Eden with masterful watercolor renderings of a tropical garden. She handles watercolor, a most difficult medium in painting, with deft and brevity. The impressionist realism of her works makes each flower, each fruit and foliage so palpable in the ethereal light it finds itself in. Her works are both enchanting and impressive with its mastery of detail. It is also a testament to her love of nature, and her other passion of gardening.
A single red hibiscus, “Bathed in Light”, on paper outshines a rose in its charming simplicity. The color composition has light and brevity, a seeming contradiction yet she pulls it off with aplomb. The shadows are bent in light and color, in soft hues of blues and lavender.
The cotton fruit branch or “Santol” has a full texture and light appeal. It is almost ready for the picking. The yellow velvety texture of its peel is evident in each brushstroke.
Bougainvillea is a favorite subject of hers, as shown by the petals and leaves that seem ready to fall out of the paper. The color transition so soft and seamless in technique shows her mastery of the watercolor medium.
The mesmerizing meticulous detail of each artwork speaks of her love of nature and conscientious character of the artist. She once remarked in an interview,
““Life, it really is beautiful. We all should stop every now and then and take time to appreciate the beauty around us. That is what I try to capture on paper… the good things around us and the hope it brings,”.**

Bathed in Light, is Karen Sioson’s first solo show, opening on September 23, 2017 at Ricco Renzo Art Gallery at Suite 206, LRI Design Plaza, 210. N. Garcia St., Bel Air 2, Makati City, with telephone numbers 898-2545. The show runs till October 22, 2017.
